Gore Creek has been listed as an "Impaired Waterway" by the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for failing to meet EPA standards for aquatic life since 2012. The town and its partners have undertaken major efforts to reverse the downward trend in insect populations in the creek. In 2016, some improvements in aquatic insect populations were observed in several monitoring locations in the creek, while declines were observed in others.
